Can a tummy tuck improve back pain?

There is some evidence that patients who have lower back pain and have significant tummy muscle laxity may get relief of their symptoms by abdominoplasty surgery. A report published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, by Oneal and colleagues from the USA, earlier this year demonstrated improvement in back pain in 8 patients. The theory is that restoring the position of the muscles to normal improves spine stabilisation.
